Robert Maheu Dies

He was Howard Hughes' right-hand man, yet he never laid eyes on him. Robert Maheu was a Las Vegas legend and an American legend in many ways. He reminded me of the Woody Allen character Zelig who was at every notable event in his historical era. The major events of the mid-20th Century, whether it be plots to assassinate Castro, oil deals in the Middle East or just about everything involving Howard Hughes, Bob Maheu's fingerprints were all over the place. I was scheduled to meet with the Maheu at a panel discussion on Howard Hughes but he had taken ill and wasn't able to make it. I then planned to schedule an interview once he recovered, but alas he never did. I really would have liked to meet him and pick his brain about life in the underworld. Another missed opportunity.
