Paul Harvey Dies

Before there was Rush Limbaugh, there was Paul Harvey. Harvey worked in radio for just about as long as the medium has existed.

Known for his resonant voice and trademark delivery of "The Rest of the Story," Harvey had been heard nationally since 1951, when he began his "News and Comment" for ABC Radio Networks.

He became a heartland icon, delivering news and commentary with a distinctive Midwestern flavor. "Stand by for news!" he told his listeners. He was credited with inventing or popularizing terms such as "skyjacker," "Reaganomics" and "guesstimate."

"Paul Harvey was one of the most gifted and beloved broadcasters in our nation's history," ABC Radio Networks President Jim Robinson said in a statement. "We will miss our dear friend tremendously and are grateful for the many years we were so fortunate to have known him."

Rest in peace.

Scott Pioli Pulls Off Major Trade Coup

I don't blog much on the NFL, especially in the off-season, but this deserves attention. Former Patriots front-office man Scott Pioli (the son-in-law of Bill Parcells, FYI) was given the keys to the Kansas City Chiefs. Complete control. Mr. Hunt will simply sign the checks. Well, he got a hotshot coach in Todd Haley from the Super Bowl runner-ups the Arizona Cardinals and then moved on to the questions of quarterback.

Question answered. He got New England QB Matt Cassel for a second-round pick. Are you kidding me? Cassel had a stellar season filling in for the injured Tom Brady and it was speculated the Pats could hold onto him in case Brady didn't recover soon enough. Apparently Belichick thinks either Brady is gonna be 100% come August or he thinks Cassel was a one-hit wonder whose success was a product of his coaching.

Whatever the reason, at this point in time it looks like Pioli has pulled a major coup and fans in KC have reason to rejoice.

Now this could change. You get a lot of reports early on that turn out to be wrong on the details, but whatever KC ends up giving to the Pats, I think it's still a steal.

Utopian Calvinism

Comedian David Konig has a post over at Big Hollywood about a recent conversation he had with a 70's Catskills comedian who complained that comedy of his day is outdated and needs to be more edgy and political like Sarah Silverman. Konig channels Eric Hoffer and offers this beautiful nugget:

The true believer sees a great Utopia off in the distance, and everything - everything - is either taking us closer or further away from that Utopia. Nothing escapes the attention of the True Believer: that piece of paper you could recycle, that lump of garbage you should be composting, that trans fat you shouldn’t be eating, that patriotic tax you should be paying, that handicapped parking space you shouldn' be parking in, that radio show you shouldn' be listening to, that joke you should - or should not - be making. It is a tremendous, all encompassing, time consuming obsession to be the arbiter of everything that either takes us closer to - or further away from - Utopia every minute of every day. It' exhausting!

Jewish Leaders Upset With Hillary

And they are idiots. Why? Because they're surprised:

In a swift about face from her views as New York's senator, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is now hammering Israel over its treatment of Palestinians in Gaza.

"I am very surprised, frankly, at this statement from the United States government and from the secretary of state," said Mortimer Zuckerman, publisher of the New York Daily News and member of the NYC Jewish Community Relations Council.

Really? Mort...may I call you Mort? You're surprised? You're surprised that Hillary Clinton will say anything depending on her particular audience? You publish a major newspaper and you are stunned to find out that Hillary's word is worthless?

It's no wonder journalism is dead.

Fairness Doctrine Battle In The Senate

Today there were two Fairness Doctrine votes in the Senate. One by Republican Jim DeMint to get the Democrats on record. Most of them lied as the vote was 87-11 in favor of the amendment that bans the Fairness Doctrine from being resurrected.

The real story was in the Durbin amendment which reads:

"To encourage and promote diversity in communication media ownership, and to ensure that the public airwaves are used in the public interest."
This also passed, but with a straight party-line vote of 57-41 (Ted Kennedy is, of course, not there and the Minnesota seat is still open), even the wonder-twins from Maine saw this for what it is: a backdoor entrance to bringing back the Fairness Doctrine without using the words "fairness" or "doctrine."

Rush Limbaugh explained on his show today:

There are laws about cross-ownership of newspapers, television stations, radio stations in the same market, and some companies have expanded their radio holdings, they've had to divest a TV station in the market or a newspaper or what have you. There isn't a company in violation of the law right now in terms of diversity in ownership. What Durbin wants to do is force additional minority ownership and then the local ownership, the new diversity ownership will then say, "You know, I don't care whether the Limbaugh show is making a lot of money, I don't want it on my station. I'm going to put on whatever I'm going to put on." That's the objective, and the words fairness and the words doctrine are never used. This is just one of the three branches. Then, after they get diversity in ownership, minority diversity ownership, then will come the local content rules, which I'm sure Durbin will then say, "Well, those rules are already on the books, too, we gotta start enforcing, nothing unconstitutional, communistic or socialistic about this. I mean, Pol Pot never even did this, and the gulags, and our people at Club Gitmo. This is perfectly within the grounds of the Constitution." So we're just going to enforce the local content rules which are going to say that 90% of a station's programming must be local.

The war continues.

Here We Go: Obama Seeks Assault Weapons Ban

Israeli Mirrors U.S. In Economic Split

Read this story and then think about our country and see if you notice some annoying similarities:

Feb. 26 (Bloomberg) -- Benjamin Netanyahu plans to apply the same small-government policies when he becomes Israel's prime minister as he did six years ago as finance minister. Then, his tax and spending cuts helped lift the economy out of recession. They may be less suitable this time around.

The Likud party leader, who has until April 3 to form a coalition, faces a shrinking economy, a growing budget deficit and a frozen corporate bond market. The recession in the U.S. and Europe has clobbered Israeli exports, which account for about half of gross domestic product in a country whose economy is smaller than Singapore's. His only fiscal tool for the moment is a budget drawn up in August and stalled in the parliament.

"Israel must take steps in same spirit as the U.S. and Europe, to allow an even bigger deficit," said Avi Ben Bassat, a professor of economics at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. "The situation requires a change in economic policy."

Netanyahu's plans for the economy may encounter objections from his future partners. Although assembling his coalition could take several weeks, one probable member, the Shas party, said during the election campaign that it would seek to restore child allowances that had been reduced under Netanyahu.

Yes, the opposition parties say, Netanyahu's policies worked before, but...no, let's not do them again. Love it.

The War Against Hate Free Speech

Nice column from David Harsanyi in the Denver Post. (Hat tip: Instapundit)

Ron Silver Fights For His Life

Actor Ron Silver always had a special place on the Rush Limbaugh Show. At the 1993 Inauguration of Bill Clinton, Silver was heard over microphones to say something to the effect of "What are those jets doing overhead?" until he realized that since a Democrat was now in office that they were "our jets now!" and was pleased as punch.

Silver seemed to be a typical Hollywood liberal, but through the 90's he began to moderate a bit, supporting Rudy Giuliani in his runs for Mayor of New York.

Then, on 9/11/01, the world changed and Ron Silver changed with it. He realized that there were such things as good and evil and that no matter what America does or says, there are people out there that want to destroy us. Silver got more involved in the political process and became a foreign policy hawk and even started hanging out with the likes of Roger L. Simon.

In 2007, Roger L. gave Silver a blog site on Pajamas Media called "Silver Bullet." I was excited to read it but in the entirety of 2008, there wasn't a single post, yet the blog was still there. I wondered what was going on. It would seem that we finally got the answer today as Roger L. Simon talked about his interview yesterday on Air America:

Let me first say something about my good friend Ron that is perhaps a little bit out of school, although he has alluded to it on his own Sirius radio show. For the last two-three years Ron Silver has been battling terminal illness, the one we most fear, taking all manner of debilitating chemo-therapy treatments, experimental and otherwise, while continuing to traipse across the country, often in acute pain, speaking out on those political issues that cost him many a Hollywood job. (He was once a leading man.) Ron Silver has shown more guts than almost any human being I know, whatever his political viewpoints.

"The one we most fear"...i.e. cancer. Terrible news, but kudos to Ron for fighting on and keeping up a busy schedule. Sometimes staying busy is the best thing you can do in a situation like that. Here's hoping he can beat this thing and continue to be a voice of sanity in Hollywood.

Mel Gibson Returns

Quote Of The Day

Via Andrew Leigh at Big Hollywood:

Mickey Rourke is thinking right now: If only my wrestler character was gay...

Giving J. Edgar Too Much Credit

A little history lesson for you folks this morning. While former FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover was without a doubt a corrupt individual who used the Bureau for his own personal vendettas, Daniel J. Flynn points out in a recent American Spectator piece that Hoover is given far too much credit for civil liberty abuses while the Democrat Presidents he served are let off the hook by historians. In other words, "the devil made them do it."

In this time-worn script, the FBI director plays the role of Mephistopheles, with various liberal presidents cast as the innocent with the pesky devil upon his shoulder.

Don't blame President John Kennedy, or his attorney general brother Bobby Kennedy, for sleazily bugging Martin Luther King's hotel rooms. The devil made them do it.

Arthur Schlesinger, Jr. contended in Robert Kennedy and His Times that tapping King's phone "had been on Hoover's agenda for some time." "The Bureau kept up its pressure," Schlesinger wrote, and "Kennedy finally assented." Schlesinger pled with the reader to understand "the dilemma in which Hoover had placed the Kennedys": "If Robert Kennedy refused a tap on King and anything went wrong, Hoover would have a field day. On the other hand, a tap might end the matter by demonstrating King's entire innocence, even to the satisfaction of the FBI." The Kennedys' motives, Camelot's court historian implied, were entirely benign. "The Kennedys authorized the taps for defensive purposes - in order to protect King, to protect the civil rights bill, to protect themselves."

And it's the same with Wilson, FDR, Truman, and LBJ.

Chandra Levy Case Coming To A Close?

A crime that I never thought would be solved appears to be headed in that direction as police look to arrest Ingmar Guandique, an illegal alien sex offender. The only reason I'm interested in this is because the Levy case was the last big story of the 20th century before the world changed forever on 9/11/01. I remember it being a very slow news summer, and this story was the best we had. Eventually, Congressman Gary Condit had his career destroyed when it was revealed he was sleeping with her. While this hardly brings him back from oblivion, it will at least lift the stigma of people thinking that he did it, something I thought he'd have to live with the rest of his life. I always figured Condit's wife did it, but I guess that was a little too Hollywood.

Incredible: NSA Surveillance Program Okay Under Obama

Shouting Fire In The UK

Video from The Brussels Journal:

Thoughts on this: I love the argument that you can't equate terrorism with Islam. Are you going to tell me next that the Spanish Inquisition had nothing to do with Christianity? This whole idea that we should ban speech that "incites" violence. Would we ban a person from saying "Let's go, Red Sox!" in a Yankees bar? The Constitutional history of America is littered with First Amendment cases that end up turning Nazis and Communists into Free Speech heroes. A situation rich with irony as Nazis and Commies seek to end free speech as we know it. Many in the UK seem to be repeating the same mistakes they made in the 1930s, but I fear there are no Churchill's left to save them from themselves.

DeMint Calls For Street Demonstrations

From Gateway Pundit:

The stately senator from South Carolina sees America's unique centuries-old system of freedom dying out.

And he thinks we may have to take to the streets to save it.

"I would think it's time to start thinking about peaceful demonstrations," he told us last week.

"The power of the people is there. Freedom is in the people's hands right now, and it's about to slip through."

Of course, the recent "stimulus" debate is what's fresh on DeMint's mind. Despite DeMint's putting 15 aides on it overnight, no one in Washington was able to read the bill, which was the most expensive in American history -- as well as being perhaps the most irresponsible.

The worst since the adoption of the income tax, DeMint figures.

Fight the power!

Obama's Plan For Destruction

From the Washington Post:

President Obama is putting the finishing touches on an ambitious first budget that seeks to cut the federal deficit in half over the next four years, primarily by raising taxes on business and the wealthy and by slashing spending on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, administration officials said.

There are only two conclusions to come to here: Either Obama is a fool that doesn't know what he's doing, or he knows exactly what he's doing and his plan is to destroy capitalism once and for all.

Mr. President, Keep The Airwaves Free

Rush Limbaugh tries to prove that sometimes the pen is mightier than the microphone as he presents a column in the Wall Street Journal:

Dear President Obama:

I have a straightforward question, which I hope you will answer in a straightforward way: Is it your intention to censor talk radio through a variety of contrivances, such as "local content," "diversity of ownership," and "public interest" rules -- all of which are designed to appeal to populist sentiments but, as you know, are the death knell of talk radio and the AM band?

You have singled me out directly, admonishing members of Congress not to listen to my show. Bill Clinton has since chimed in, complaining about the lack of balance on radio. And a number of members of your party, in and out of Congress, are forming a chorus of advocates for government control over radio content. This is both chilling and ominous.

It's Bibi!

Boosh! Netanyahu chosen to form new government in Israeli. It's a long-time coming for Bibi who had the premiership stolen from him in 1999 from a Bill Clinton cabal.

"Iran is seeking to obtain a nuclear weapon and constitutes the gravest threat to our existence since the war of independence," he said at a ceremony at President Shimon Peres's official residence.

"The terrorist forces of Iran threaten us from the north," the presumptive prime minister said in reference to Lebanon and Syria, where Israel says Tehran supplies arms to Hezbollah and Hamas.

"For decades, Israel has not faced such formidable challenges.

"The responsibility we face is to achieve security for our country, peace with our neighbours and unity among us," he said.
I fear he's on his own.

Klaus Slams EU

My hero, Czech President Vaclav Klaus, has once again put the EU in its place:

Klaus said that questioning deeper integration has become an "uncriticizable assumption that there is only one possible and correct future of the European integration."

"The enforcement of these notions ... is unacceptable," Klaus said. "Those who dare thinking about a different option are labeled as enemies." Observers had been expecting Klaus to deliver a critical speech during his first and only visit to the EU chamber at a time when his country holds the EU limelight as chair of the 27-nation bloc.

Economic Terrorism On 9/11/08?

Fairness Doctrine Trial Balloons Soar

Many a Democrat is talking up a reinstatement of the Fairness Doctrine now that we have a socialist government. This is, of course, a series of trial balloons to gauge public interest, or more likely, public apathy. Today, the biggest balloon of all when former President Bill Clinton raised the issue. Remember this is the man that accused Rush Limbaugh of inciting the Oklahoma City Bombing and went out of his way to destroy the lives of his opponents and former sex partners, so no surprise that he want to suppress free speech. Could be all talk, but hard to say. G-d knows Obama has taken a hit for his power grab on the Census. Stay tuned...

What A Mess

Busy today, not much time to opine. Let me just say that this country's government is a mess and nobody seems to care. Good? Great. Good night.

Tight Race In Israel

Well, Israel once again proves itself to be a country about as split politically as the United States. Votes are being tallied but it looks like Kadima will get the most seats, 29, just two more than Likud. This led to some crowing from left wingers initially until they realized that the combined right wing parties won the most seats. Right now the kingmaker seems to be Avigdor Lieberman, head of the Yisrael Beiteinu which nabbed 14 seats. He's adamant that the new government have a policy of destroying Hamas which would tend to mean he'll back Netanyahu, but you never know...this is Israel. Looks like we'll find out tomorrow.

Did Paulson Threaten Martial Law?

There's a story hitting the blogs that during a meeting on September 18, 2008, Hank Paulson warned Congressional members that if the $700-billion bailout plan wasn't passed, martial law would be declared. I don't doubt this was said...seems very much like something Paulson would say, but I doubt it would have happened. More here.

Cultural Concessions On A One-Way Street

Fjordman looks at the decline of Great Britain and the for that matter, the English-speaking world.

I'm not sure why the Anglosphere is so bad. In the case of Britain, I strongly suspect it's partly caused by a Post-Imperial Stress Syndrome for a nation that once ruled much of the world and now cannot even rule its own suburbs. Empire was their identity. Much of the same can be said about the French. Indeed I suspect that one of their motivations for supporting the awful EU project is for them to resurrect some of their past imperial glory in another form.
Yet this cannot explain the actions of the United States, which is still the world's greatest power although that may not last forever. There is some form of universal proposition nation idea with roots dating back to the Enlightenment at work here. It's the concept that a country is not a nation based on a shared heritage, but an abstract entity which can be joined by absolutely anybody, a bit like an enlarged video club. If you claim that the United States is a "universal" nation and that Hamas-supporting Muslims, with which Westerners have absolutely nothing in common, can and should be imported to the USA, then you are a supporter of the concept of a proposition nation. This idea will eventually kill the United States as we once knew it.

I don't necessarily think that there are people that don't belong in certain countries, it comes down to how you act once you're there. It's an unwritten rule for Americans traveling abroad that it's only polite and correct to at least make the attempt to speak the language of the natives. Nine times out of ten, when they see that you are making this effort, they will then speak English to make it easier for you. If you just expect them to do so from the get-go, it's considered rude, and that seems more than fair to me. What we are dealing with in the United States and most of the Western nations are immigrants that wish to enter a country and make no concessions whatsoever and in turn, want us to make concessions to them whether it be the language they speak or their cultural practices. This becomes a dangerous game when Sharia Law comes into play.

The Change They Believed In

Heath Shuler, Maverick Or Traitor?

So former NFL Quarterback, now North Carolina Congressman Heath Shuler is building a reputation in Washington as a bit of a maverick.

Oh, wait, he's a Democrat. My bad. Democrats who buck party leadership are considered traitors. Only Republican like John McCain, Arlen Specter, and the Ladies of Maine can buck their party and be considered heroes. Shuler on the other hand is on the road to becoming a pariah on the level of a Joe Lieberman. The Politico reports:

Rep. Heath Shuler (D-N.C) has further ingratiated himself with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi --not-- by declaring that Pelosi and Harry Reid "failed" the bipartisanship test on stimulus.

"In order for us to get the confidence of America, it has to be done in a bipartisan way," Shuler said in Raleigh following an economic forum, according to the AP.

"We have to have everyone -- Democrats and Republicans standing on the stage with the administration -- saying, 'We got something done that was efficient, stimulative and timely.'"

Here's the kicker: "I truly feel that's where maybe House leadership and Senate leadership have really failed."

Shuler, rumored to be mulling a '10 Senate run, was one of 11 House Democrats to vote "no" on the stimulus and was already deep in Pelosi's doghouse. Now he'll have to build a Harry Reid wing.

Heath, we hardly knew ye.

Turning The United States Into Michigan

A trial balloon is being floated that Obama may replace Supreme Court Justice Ruth Ginsburg, who is suffering from pancreatic cancer, with incompetent Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm. Obama Withdraws Iraq Appointment

From the Washington Times: (Hat tip: Sister Toldjah)

The Obama administration asked retired Marine Gen. Anthony Zinni to be U.S. ambassador to Iraq but abruptly withdrew the appointment without explanation, Gen. Zinni said Tuesday.

Gen. Zinni, a former commander of Central Command, told The Washington Times that he had been offered the job by the White House national security adviser, retired Marine Gen. James Jones, two weeks ago and that Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton confirmed the offer on Jan. 26.

"I started making arrangements," Gen. Zinni said, but became concerned because he heard nothing further from the State Department or White House. He called Gen. Jones Monday night and was told that Christopher Hill, the outgoing assistant secretary of State for East Asia, was getting the job.

Gen. Zinni said no explanation was given. "That kind of bothered me," he said. "I was told that I had it."

I knew Obama wasn't ready for prime-time, but this has now gone far beyond my expectations. What must Putin, Hu and the other thugs of the world be thinking? Do I have to bring up JFK/Khrushchev?
