Alexander Haig. He was deep within the Nixon Administration, to the point that some surmised that while he may have not been Deep Throat, he was still a key source to Bob Woodward. Later in the Reagan Administration as Secretary of State, he infamously declared after Reagan was shot by John Hinckley that he was in charge. It was a statement that was greatly misunderstood, but the damage was done. "I'm in charge!" jokes followed him throughout the remainder of his life. I myself am guilty of this, once convincing a naive colleague at my place of work that Haig was in charge of the state of Florida when then Governor Lawton Chiles passed away in 1998. He was pretty mad at me later.
